Unwanted Body Hair and Spots

Laura wrote:

For years I have had spots, not only on my face and neck but all over my back, shoulders, chest and even my breasts. I've recently started going out to clubs and meeting new people and it really gets me down if the top I wear is strapless or a bit low and you can see alll these spots.

I also had darker hair around my belly button when I was younger and I shaved it off, which I know now was a big mistake as I have to keep shaving now.

The hair on my arms, my stomach etc is quite dark, but I cant afford to keep lightning it, can you suggest anything please as I'm starting to feel I'm strange and ugly!!

Dear Laura

You do not say how old you are, so it's hard to very specific; you don't mention any medical conditions, or medicines you take, or any notes about your family history.

As a very general point, if you are in your teens, this may be a simple (though frustrating) hormonal effect that will sort itself out with time.

But, if you are older than teens, if you do have any other medical conditions, and take medicines, or there's anything in the family that seems to relate, then it isn't something that will self-resolve.

Either way, the prime suspect (but not the only one) is hormones, and so it would be a good idea to get checked out by a doctor; and don't leave it too long.

Where clothes are concerned, look closely at what others wear; you'll find that with a bit of forethought, you can usually cover up without look out of place (or overheating - which won't help). Think about that, because this may be a medical problem, but it shouldn't be a social one.

Please Note: I am NOT a physician, and any 'health advice' should NOT be taken to be "Medical Advice" - because it is not - my aim is to give you a few possibilities to be thinking about, and some general 'common sense' advice - if my advice says see a doctor, then see a doctor!
