Dear Fiona

Your birthday is your day, not theirs, and you want all your friends around you. And why not?. All you have to do is invite both (at the same time) then speak to each one, explaining that you understand she hates XX, but you value her friendship, and you know she'll put her feelings to one side for the one day.

Please don't be tempted to use the day to try and force them to be friends; that'll ruin everyone's day.

If they really are close friends, that will work; if there's a problem, at least you'll know who your friends are!
