Baby insists on Dad's name

My daughters baby is due in a few
weeks time. She's 18; the father,
who left her four weeks ago is 17.
We want to know if she can give the
baby his last name with out him.

You'll need to ask at the register
office, it's a matter of local law.
But,
whether you can or not, is nothing
to do with making him provide for
the child. That's quite separate;
so if that's your daughter's reason
for wanting to label the baby with
a quitter's name, she's going to be
disappointed.
She should
try to imagine what the baby might
want in a few years time - it's the
baby who must live with her decision.
